The U.S. ISSN Center (Library of Congress) reviews pre-publication requests using a title, its numeric/chronological designation (volume/issue), frequency, publisher, and a URL where those can be seen. This page is built to show all of that directly, plus scope and editorial policy, so it can serve as the "mock-up" ISSN pre-publication applications call for.

JESAI welcomes original research, reviews, and methodological papers at the intersection of environmental science and artificial intelligence/technology, including but not limited to:

Editorial policy

How review works

Every submission goes through a defined, seven-step process from submission to publication, coordinated by our editorial team under the principle of editorial independence:

  1. Submission — full manuscript, abstract, keywords, author info
  2. Editorial screening (3–7 days) — scope, quality, ethics check
  3. Peer review (2–4 weeks) — 2–3 reviewers, double-blind, evaluating originality, rigor, and contribution
  4. Author revisions (1–3 weeks)
  5. Final decision (~1 week)
  6. Copyediting & formatting (1–2 weeks)
  7. Publication — assigned to volume/issue, DOI where available

Target review cycle: 4–8 weeks. Target publication cycle: 8–12 weeks. We're currently building our editorial board — see Membership if you're interested in serving as a reviewer or editor.

Why environmental science and AI belong in the same journal

Most journals draw a hard line between natural sciences and computational fields, but the most consequential environmental research happening right now sits directly on that boundary — remote sensing pipelines, climate models, and monitoring networks all depend as much on algorithms as on instruments. JESAI is deliberately interdisciplinary because we think reviewers fluent in both domains produce better science than two separate journals ever could. This shapes everything from our reviewer recruitment to the kinds of methodology sections we expect authors to write in full, including the assumptions baked into any model they use.

Building JESAI: our peer review process, explained

Before we accept a single manuscript, we wanted our review process written down and public rather than assumed. Every submission that clears initial editorial screening goes to at least two independent reviewers under double-anonymization: authors don't know who's reviewing them, and reviewers don't know whose work they're reading. Reviewers are asked to evaluate methodological soundness, the honesty of stated limitations, and whether conclusions are actually supported by the data presented — not novelty alone. We're publishing this now, ahead of our first accepted paper, because we'd rather authors know what they're submitting into than find out after the fact.

AI in environmental monitoring: promise and pitfalls

Machine learning has genuinely changed what's observable in environmental science — models now flag deforestation from satellite imagery in near real time and forecast air quality at a resolution that was impractical a decade ago. But the same models inherit the blind spots of their training data: a wildfire-detection system trained mostly on one region's vegetation and climate can quietly underperform elsewhere, and few papers report that gap clearly. JESAI will be asking authors who use predictive models in environmental work to state, explicitly, where their model has not been validated — not just where it has.

What we're looking for in Volume 1

We'd rather be specific than generic about this. For our inaugural volume, we're especially interested in work that treats its methods section as seriously as its results — papers that show their data limitations rather than bury them, and interdisciplinary submissions that a purely environmental-science or purely computational reviewer might each find slightly unfamiliar.
